Jim was born on August 25, 1938 in Vernon, Texas, to George and Martha Nixon. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1961 with a degree in Geology and spent his whole career in that field. After graduation, he was immediately drafted in the Army, where he served two years in Korea during peacetime. He received a private flag ceremony upon his death and was very patriotic, always enjoying the freedoms of his country.
Jim was so many things to so many people - a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather. He maintained many friendships over the years - in Harrold and Jacksboro, Texas, where he went to elementary and high school; all through his working life into retirement, and even with some lifelong army buddies. He truly cherished all of them.
Jim enjoyed traveling, including lots of cruises with his wife, Alyce, collecting mementos from all over the world (with quite an international selection of beer cans, empty of course). His favorite places were Egypt and New Zealand but his heart belonged to Texas! He was always outdoors on his 8-acre home in Arlington, where he raised his five children and resided for over 50 years. He was a handyman in the true sense of the word - he would try to fix everything himself and could spend lots of time figuring out how to make it work, successful or not. Another of Jim’s true joys in life was spending as much time as possible on his 350-acre property on the Brazos River. He loved to get up early and mow with his tractor, then spend the afternoons and evenings around the campfire sharing stories with family and friends. His children and grandchildren learned to hunt deer, turkey, and hogs on his place, which he was very proud of.
Jim is survived by his wife Alyce; sons Kreg (Jenifer), Kobe (Leah), Kier (Dusty), Kas (Beka), and daughter Kesa Robson (Craig); granddaughters Taylor, Maci, Tori, Kamri and Chase, and great granddaughters Vail and Violet; sister Beverly; brother David; nephews Eric and Kyle, and niece Audrey.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, George, his mother, Martha, and his grandson, Brodie.
He will be missed greatly by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held in Vernon, Texas, sometime in June. For more information please contact a family member.
