We announce and celebrate the promotion to Heaven of our loving and devoted mother, Nana, and friend to the many lives she touched. Jean K. Miller, four days shy of age 98, passed away peacefully December 24, 2019 after a long fight with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
Jean was born in December 1921 in Livingston Manor, New York to Albert and Margaret Krom, and was the youngest of their four daughters all whom preceded her in death along with her husband of 64 years, John W. Miller. She was a beloved & devoted mother survived by her son Keith and daughter-in law Rhonda Miller of Arlington, TX, adored Nana and proud grandmother of Jessica and husband Mike Bybee, Jeanette Miller, Wade Miller, and was a loving great grandmother to Skyler Bybee. She was a loved and revered aunt to nephew Bob and wife Pat Johnson, nephew Kent Shaver, Vicki and husband Joel Waldo, Bill and wife Carol Weeks, Pat Brooks, Marsha Miller, Barbara Pamboukes, and many other nephews and nieces and dear friends, whom she loved and influenced deeply.
Raised in upstate New York, she attended Livingston Manor High School. Her last year in high school, she met her loving husband John W. who enlisted in the infantry during WWII and served with honor for 26 years. Raised during the Great Depression, she witnessed incredible changes over her extended lifetime. While married to John, he became a Lieutenant Colonel and they lived overseas in Germany, Panama, Vietnam and in Paris, France for three years while he was stationed at the US Embassy. They traveled the world together during his 26 years of service as well as after retirement, and adopted and raised their son John Keith. They later moved to Arlington, TX where John managed a paper plant.
Jean lived a full life as a wonderful wife, mother, Nana, homemaker and friend. She worked various jobs throughout her young life as a telephone operator and a secretary using shorthand. She studied real estate and worked for a time in that profession. She attended French language school and U.S. Department of State college to prepare for her stay in Paris. There, her interests turned to gourmet cooking, where she graduated from Les Cours de Cuisine and completed courses at Le Cordon Bleu in France. In Arlington she attended courses at TCU, Helen Corbett’s special cooking course, and El Centro College. She later returned to Paris and attended La Varenne Cooking School. She loved to entertain and kept a meticulous house. She shared her love of cooking and entertaining with her friends and family. Reporters and photographers from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram documented her famous decadent desert parties.
Jean was also a longtime member of the Arlington Women’s club where her culinary and hospitality skills were demonstrated and appreciated. The 9th Infantry Division Association, of which she and her husband were members, also benefited from her talents. She was involved in a bridge group for years which met regularly. Both John and Jean were long-standing members of the First Presbyterian Church Arlington Texas. Most important to her, was her husband, son and grandchildren to whom she devoted much of her time.
Au revoir Mom and Nana. Thank you for always being there for us and giving so much of yourself. You were a splendid example and will “Always and Forever” be in our hearts.
