James E. Elkins departed this life on April 24, 2023 and went to be in the presence of his heavenly Father and Lord, whom he served in this life since he was 13 years old. He was born on January 1, 1947 to John and Pearl Elkins in Baytown, Texas. James lost his father at the age of 4 and his mother at 15. He lived with his uncle and aunt until he finished high school. He graduated from R. L. Lee High School in Baytown. He received his bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He became a Certificed Public Accountant in Texas and remained licensed until his death. He was employed in industry as a controller. He also enjoyed teaching as an adjunct instructor at a local college and an adjunct professor at a local university.
James met Marta Rice at church and married her in 1976. They were blessed with a daughter, Jennifer, who later gave them a granddaughter who was beautiful and very smart. This granddaughter made them smile and made them proud whenever they visited her. Jennifer also gave then a grandson.
James enjoyed being involved in various church activities for many years, especially in the choir and was involved in the finance function and served as the treasurer for 17 years at the church where he met his wife. James and his wife, Marta enjoyed vacationing, especially cruising out of Galveston and going to the beach. Other things that he enjoyed was flying in light aircraft. He earned a pilot’s license. He had an interest in ham radio from his teenage years and had an amateur radio license from 1978. He was also an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, Marta for over 44 years, their daughter. Jennifer and her husband Grant, granddaughter Ada, and grandson Greyson.
