James was born in Crosbyton, Texas, to W.E. and Ora Mae Behringer and was the oldest of five siblings. James graduated in 1946 from Grand Prairie High School. He joined the US Army in 1949 and was in the Military Police serving in Vienna, Austria. He had achieved the rank of sergeant when he was honorably discharged. James married his wife, Ramey Nell Dikes, in 1952. He followed his military police experience and joined the Dallas Police Department in 1955. James served as a patrol officer for several years and as then promoted to detective. He was assigned to the Burglary and Theft division for many years and then joined the Intelligence/Vice division. James was a detective sergeant when he retired in 1976. After a few years of being self-employed, he went back into law enforcement and joined the Tarrant County Sherrif's Dept. He remained an officer there for several years until he then decided to permanently retired and spend time with his family.
After his retirement, James loved working in his garden. He would share his vegetable crops with neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking. He would spend countless hours in his wood shop building lawn furniture and decorative items. James never met a stranger. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He especially loved reminiscing about all of his life experiences. James was a member of Tate Springs Baptist Church where he had previously served the church community as a Senior Adult Class Director.
James is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ramey Behringer, and his beloved son, Blake Behringer.
He is survived by his daughter, Lydia Weil, and husband, Freddie; daughter-in-law, Jolynn Behringer Smith, and her husband, Allan; 4 grandsons, Clinton Weil and his wife, Kristi; Casey Weil and his wife, Georgia; Wade Behringer and his wife, Sarah; and Jake Behringer; 4 great grandchildren, Carter and Cash Weil (Clinton); Collins and Caden (Casey); brother, Gary Behringer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
