Herbert A. Courtney, Jr., born June 29, 1943, was called home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, August 26, 2023. There to meet him were his parents, Herbert A. Courtney, Sr. and Emma Griffin Courtney.
He is survived by his loving wife whom he affectionately called his “Honey Buns”, Cary Jones Courtney, sons Herbert A. Courtney III and Richard A. Courtney, daughters-in-law Michelle Courtney and Missy Courtney respectively, step daughter Cary Mittye Watson, grandchildren Christian Courtney, Haley Courtney, and Gabriel Courtney; as well as very special cousins and life-long friends.
Herbert grew up in Baker, LA and graduated Baker High School in 1961. After graduating Southeastern University with a BS in Hammond, LA, he left to join the air force. After proudly serving his country for 20 years, Herbert retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Col and started working at Exxon Baton Rouge Refinery.
Herbert made a special point to be present in all of his sons after school sporting activities. He also taught his sons and his grandson, Christian how to hunt. He was a dedicated and loving father/grandfather.
Herbert retired from ExxonMobil after 29 years. He was a long-standing choir member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church. Some of his favorite past times included hunting, traveling, watching sports especially LSU, attending the New Orleans Saints football games, singing and spending time with his family, friends and fur babies. His Christian faith was a constant thru his entire life.
Herbert passed away at the hospital surrounded by his family after a brief battle with Leukemia. Herbert's memory will forever remain a source of inspiration and love in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed.
It was Herbert’s wishes to be cremated and internment of ashes to rest at Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge, LA alongside his mom. A graveside memorial will be held to honor Herbert’s life and those he touched at a later date.
