I learned a lot from Fred.   Our woodworking was  different-- I learned that what I though was  a defect (say a knot hole ) was in-fact something that added "intrest".  He was a joy to work with and I truly miss being able to make piles of sawdust with this truly christian gentlemen.  Engineers and architect frequently don't agree but this engineer learned a lot from this  great architect

Uncle Fritz to me was always a joyful man whose smile made me feel important every time we talked at family visits. I enjoyed him very much. I remember a day in the late 70s with my cousins on their piece of land clearing brush with Fritz, and I remember the long hours years later spent together making a beautiful book shelf out of sample walnut flooring. A true thinker and creator.  I will always carry fond memories.

Fred and I shared many hours of fun making sawdust out of all types of wood. His "Plans" were always detailed and sometimes hard for me to follow but in the end, I appreciated his artistic talent. He was a true Christian gentlemen that I was privileged to know and spend so many enjoyable hours with.

Grandpa to me, Gumpa to our kids…oh how you will be missed!
My greatest memories with Grandpa, were the occasions I got to spend the night with him and Grandma at their house on Bluebonnet.  We would always start the evening with a trip to Furr’s to have fried fish, okra, mac n cheese and chocolate silk pie.  The three of us would enjoy dinner and would talk about anything and everything. Once back at home, we would enjoy the evening together being outside while we still had light (they had the best backyard and garden) and then in to watch TV before bed.
Later on in life, I loved watching him spend time with our kids.  He built homemade blocks that all of the Great Grandkids played with and he never complained when there would be racetracks and houses built across the living room.  Once Trace got older, he loved taking him out to the shop where they would build whatever my little guy came up with. I always knew to have the back of my car empty because the two of them would fill it with scrap wood so that Trace could come home and continue creating. We will miss you Gumpa!


Fred was a friend, a mentor, and the greatest Father-in-Law a person could have. I have so many memories of craft projects we did together such as building a utility trailer when neither of us had welded before, carving a wood stock when Fred didn't even care for guns, painting a Ford tractor for his farm, and building Christmas decorations for his house. These are just a few of the many wonderful memories I have of Fred. He really knew how to make me feel like one of the family. I will miss you Fred.

Dad never did anything halfway.  When he once asked if I wanted him to do any wood project, I shared that I always dreamed of Adirondack chairs for the deck.  Not only did he construct and pack up the makings of six wooden Adirondacks, fully painted in a color of my choice, but he then drove them all the way to Blue Ridge, Ga. to personally assemble them for us.  In dad fashion, the chairs came complete with blueprints, instructions and a custom made template for easy assembly.  The chairs are truly a treasure, as is he, and they will continue to beckon us to enjoy many "back porch sittings" for years to come.
