Edward H. Burgess passed into eternal rest to be joined with his Heavenly Father on Saturday May 24, 2014 in Arlington, Texas. His service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Moore Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
Ed, or Hilton as his Mississippi family called him, was born on December 12, 1924 in Pocahontas, Mississippi to Robert E.L. Burgess and Flossie Tanner Burgess. He grew up and attended public schools in Mississippi. He was in the U.S. Navy a short period of time; stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois. After discharge from the Navy, he went to work for Magnolia Petroleum Company in Mississippi; later known as Mobil Oil Corp. He was transferred to Dallas in 1947 with Magnolia where he worked in field research. His work required much traveling, especially in the later years of his career with the company. He retired from Mobil on January 1, 1990, after more than 45 years of service.
Mr. Burgess met the love of his life, Gloria Moffat, in early 1946 and they married on March 23, 1946 in Brandon, Mississippi. Upon transfer to Dallas in 1947 they joined Cliff Temple Baptist Church. In 1953 they moved to Arlington where they joined First Baptist Church. He remained a faithful member there until his death.
Ed loved to hunt and fish. His passion was hunting quail and having quail suppers with family and friends. He loved to fish with his son, son-in-law, grandson and friends.
Ed and Gloria enjoyed many vacations together and when the children were grown they continued traveling to places like Hawaii, where they spent their 40th wedding anniversary.
He loved his family so very much. They meant everything to him and he meant everything to them. He was the rock of his family and will be missed tremendously.
Mr. Burgess is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 63 years, Gloria Burgess, and his sister, Norma Logan. Survivors include his son, Ed Jr. and wife Winnie, daughter, Janie Hagood and husband Gary, granddaughter, Andrea Farris and husband Jason, granddaughter Angelia Matthews and husband Allen, grandson Matthew Hagood and wife Jennifer, and granddaughter Melanie Smith and husband John. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Lucas, Brenden, Annaliese, Kassadi, Kyleigh, Kambree and Joseph, one brother, Robert E. Burgess and wife Eleanor and brother-in-law, Curtis Moffat, along with several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to Mission Arlington.
