Edna Lou Mattox was 100 years old when she passed on to Glory on April 10th, 2024. Edna was born and raised in Crowell, Texas to Elmer and Armente Brisco. She graduated from Crowell High School in 1941. She did her part during WWII by working in a machine stop in Houston, Texas. There, she met and married her husband, Houston Mattox. They were married for 60 years until his death in 2002 and had two sons: Leroy and Larry Mattox.
She really enjoyed her work as a preschool teacher for over 20 years. After retirement, she loved cooking, gardening, and genealogy. She also loved quilting and making Afghans and giving them away. She entered one of her quilts in the State Fair of Dallas and won second Place. She had many stories about long gone ancestors. She went through the depression and WWII, and some might hard times.
She is remembered for her hospitality. She had brother in laws and, brother and family, nephews and cousins hiring her home off and on from about a year after marriage till about 1974. She was always glad to help anybody that was trying to help themselves. She helped nurse both of her parents, travelling back and forth from Crowell to Richland Hills while still caring and working for her own family. She welcomed everyone who came to visit and would jump up and cook for all. She was a good cook. We will miss her chocolate and coconut pies, banana pudding, and many other dishes.
She was especial close to her brother’s daughter Sherry. Edna and Sherry could talk for hours about genealogy. She was pretty feisty. There was never a doubt about how she felt. If she thought you were wrong, she would let you know but praise you for your good points.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 brothers, 4 sisters, 11 nephews, 6 nieces, 1 granddaughter and one life insurance policy.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Leroy and Larry, 3 grandsons, Richard, Jeff and Jimmy, Daughter in law Doris, 4 great granddaughters: Julia, Cambrie, Haley and Katelyn, and 2 great great grandsons; Mason and Levi.
