Services for Donald George Hawerwas, 79, of Mansfield, will be graveside, Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. Pastor Dallas Vandiver will officiate. Donald passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 in a Mansfield hospital due to congestive heart failure, diabetes, and COPD. As were his personal wishes, there will be no viewing or visitation and attendees are requested to wear casual dress.
Donald was born June 23, 1934 in Dallas to George King Hauerwas and Sally Leola Mantooth Hawerwas. Don graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas where he was an Eagle Scout. After graduation he attended North Texas State University in Denton and UTA in Arlington. He joined the United States Marines October 29, 1953 in Dallas and served as a Sgt for three years during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged October 29, 1956 at Camp LeJune, North Carolina.
Don was a brick mason and contractor in early years, then a long distance truck driver. He found his niche in sales in the Aerospace industry for many years. Don and Nelda were wed April 8, 1988 at the First Christian Church of Arlington. He was a Past Master and lifetime member of Alexander C Garrett Masonic Lodge in Dallas. He was an avid golfer and taught his step-on and one of the step-grandsons his love of the game.
Mr. Hawerwas is survived by his son Shannon Hauerwas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; wife Nelda of Mansfield, step-daughter Melody Belz Davis and her husband Danny of Venus, step-son Nathan Ray Belz and his fiancée Pray of Irving, one grand-daughter, Jennifer of Cedar Rapids, step-grandsons; Nathan Allan, Kevin, and Scott Belz and their mother Paula, all of Irving and step-grandson Derek Davis of Venus, and by three step great-grandchildren; Noah, Spencer, and Bradli Belz.
