David Gerald, age 77, passed away on January 27, 2020, in Arlington, Texas. David was born September 13, 1942, in Washington, D.C., the 6th child of Edward Henry Gerald and Marguerite Tyler Gerald. After he graduated from McKinley High School, David enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves as an E-1. During this time, he earned his Associate of Science in Criminology and an Associate of Arts in General Education degrees. David then re-enlisted for active duty and served 20 honorable years, ultimately achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2). He proudly served onboard the USS Sacramento (AOE-1), the USS Lang (DE-1060), the USS William Rush (DD-714), the USS Goodrich (DDR-831), and the USS Kawishiwi (AO-146). During his time in service, David, well regarded for his leadership, received 4 Navy Good Conduct Medals, the Battle Efficiency Ribbon, the National Defense Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Sea Service Medal.
After retiring from the military, he settled his family in Arlington, TX, where he worked for 20 years in the thermal energy plant at the University of Texas at Arlington. David enjoyed serving community volunteer services in the Arlington and Fort Worth vicinities. He was a member of the Fort Worth Chapter Retired Officers Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Fort Worth American Legion Post #838, and the Dapper Social Charity Club in Fort Worth. Upon his second retirement, David continued his travels around the country and the world but most enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends. He is remembered for his comfort and good humor, his invaluable life advice, as well as his generosity and kind-hearted nature.
David was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Barbara Ann Gerald; his two children: Marquerite Alizabeth Herzog and David Tyrone Gerald; by his grandchildren: Cimoya Lovetta Gerald and William David Herzog; by his great-granddaughter, Azaiyla Lovetta Richardson ; and by his brother Frank Gerald. A small service with military honors will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on February 18th at 3pm.
