Rex joined the United States Army at age 16 and went ashore at Omaha Beach as a tank commander on D-day. He was among those surrounded by the Nazis at the Battle of the Bulge and took part in the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp where so many atrocities had occurred. He later served in Korea from the onset until the end of that conflict.
Rex was the only remaining Army Sargeant Major of the first twenty to receive that rank. He retired from the army as a Command Sargent Major in 1962 after 21 years of service. He then went to work for the United States Air Force as a Records Officer for the next 23 years before retiring again with a total service to his country of 44 years.
Rex married Lois Marie Lankford in 1969 and was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years. His eldest son, Robert Dale Case also preceded him in death in 1999.
He is survived by his son Herbert Jerome Case and wife Donna of Independence, MO.
His daughter Mary Lee Case and Husband Pastor Joe W. Gresham of Fort Worth, TX.
His step son Doyle Lankford and family of Colorado Springs, CO.
Three granddaughters: Heather Lynn Salinas and husband Emilio of Fort Worth, TX.; Cherie Marie Livingston of Fort Worth, TX.; and Korina Dawn Courtney and husband Clayton Courtney of Crowley, TX.
Eleven great grandchildren: Michael and Heidi Salinas; Candalyn, Anikka, Pierce and Elektra Livingston; Mikayla, Joshua, Samuel, Darien Ramirez and Kaitlyn Courtney.
His sister: Betty Lou Rovinski of Clarksville, TN.
Rex loved the Lord Jesus Christ and had been a member of the Circle Drive Baptist church of Colorado Springs for several decades before moving to Texas in 2009. For the last five years he has attended the Fort Worth Northwest Seventh-day Adventist Church.
This beloved warrior, to whom the people of this country owe so much, will be greatly missed by his family, friends and church family.
He is gone, but he is not forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, February 12, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home.
