Carolyn Anne Thomas Powell, 81, of Frisco, Texas, passed away February 9, 2022. She was born in Springfield, Illinois, on November 18, 1940. Her Swedish-origin family soon moved to Texas, and Carolyn was raised in Corpus Christi. The oldest of 5, Carolyn became very close to her mother and siblings during lean but lovely childhood years. She married her high school sweetheart, John Powell, and worked to put him through architecture school. Their son, Don, was born during those years, and daughter, Janna, followed five years later. After a brief stint in the Chicago area, the Powell's settled in Houston, where John’s career took off. They eventually relocated to Ft. Worth and Greenville, S.C. for business. While in Greenville, Carolyn finally had time to go back to school, completing her history degree at the University of South Carolina. Much to Carolyn’s delight, they again relocated to Houston, where she joined the staff of the Houston Foundation. Carolyn became a grant officer there, responsible for distributing millions of dollars to worthy causes – a work she adored and performed with excellence. Upon retirement, John and Carolyn settled in the middle of Texas on land between the small towns of Shelby and Industry, restoring a 100+ year-old farmhouse together. For John’s health care, they moved to Brenham, where their grandchildren made rich use of the free Blue Bell tours. There, Carolyn developed great friendships at First Baptist Church and with her rug-hooking group who scandalized their grandkids by calling themselves “Hookers.” When John suddenly passed, Carolyn moved to Frisco, Texas, to be near her daughter Janna. In Frisco, she again flourished, making human friends in her neighborhood, at Frisco Bible Church and First Baptist, McKinney, and loving on every dog in sight.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, John and son, Don. She is survived by: her siblings, Betty Thomas of Denton, Texas, Danny Thomas of New Braunfels, TX, Nancy Sutton of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Patti Babbin of Tyler, Texas; daughter, Janna Powell Braudrick and son-in-law, Wayne Braudrick; grandchildren, Jessica Braudrick Anders of Little Elm, Texas, Michael Wayne Braudrick of Frisco, Texas, and Benjamin Powell Braudrick of Frisco, Texas.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Frisco Bible Church, 8000 Sanctuary Drive, Frisco, Texas. A graveside will follow for family at Moore Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.
