Bill was born on September 19, 1928, in Temple, Texas to parents James Earl Vaughn and Pearl Smith Vaughn. He had two brothers, Don E. Smith and Jimmie E. Vaughn. He went on to graduate from Temple High School and was a graduate of Texas A&M University where he was a distinguished member of the Corps of Cadets.
Bill’s military career spanned 25 years and included assignments in Japan, Germany, combat tours in Korea and Vietnam, and various leadership posts throughout the United States including the Pentagon. His service has been recognized with three Purple Hearts, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with three Oak Leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Stars, Air Medal with 21 Oak Leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, as well as many other service medals.
Bill had a life-long love of aviation, which included flying fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft in his military career and on into his civilian life. He held his Private Pilot license until he was 91 years old.
Bill was dedicated to God, country and family. He was a member of the Church on Rush Creek in Arlington, Texas for many years before moving to Flower Mound, Texas where he joined Flower Mound Presbyterian Church. He spent many hours as an active volunteer in both churches. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and loyal wife, Olean Vaughn, and daughter Patricia Vaughn, now reunited together with each other and our Lord.
Bill is survived by his daughter Virginia V. Markham and husband, James R. Markham of Forest, Virginia, son, Taylor M. Vaughn and his wife Lynn B. Vaughn of Flower Mound, Texas; Granddaughters Heather C. Dorsey, Elisabeth M. Cooper, Lauren V. Team and husband C.B. Team IV, Erin L. Vaughn; Grandsons Cody M. Vaughn and Joshua R. Vaughn, and Great Grandchildren Brena M. Dorsey, Clara B. Dorsey, Charlie B. Team, Taylor E. Team.
