Betty Jeanne Pettit, 88, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 South Collins St., Arlington. Visitation: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 North Davis St., Arlington. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, gifts in Betty Jeanne's memory may be made to Texas Health, Arlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 800 W. Randol Mill Rd., Arlington, Texas 76012. Betty Jeanne was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Arlington to Eugenia and Lloyd Webb. She graduated from Arlington High School and married Melvin Wood Pettit Jr. on Jan. 4, 1944, at the First Presbyterian Church in Arlington. Betty Jeanne graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a B.A. and M.A. in English and taught at Arlington High School and James Bowie High School. She was awarded Teacher of the Year, taught Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church, directed the Red Cross Summer Swimming Programs at Meadowbrook and Randol Mill pools, worked avocationally with Reading is Fundamental (RIF), and partnered with her husband Mel for years of service in the Arlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, among numerous civic and church activities. Betty Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Wood Pettit Jr. Survivors: Children, Anna Frances Pettit and partner, Brenda Huddleston, Keith Wood Pettit and wife, Judy Ann, Stephen Webb Pettit and wife, Robbie Ann; grandchildren, Adam Pettit, Jessica Pettit, Jason Pettit, Adrienne Loper; and six great-grandchildren. She was also survived by her sister, Frances Webb McIntyre and husband, James P. McIntyre; and nieces, nephews and friends.
