Betty Marie Mickey Cockrell lived a life of love and laughter which she shared with all she knew. She was a loving, loyal wife, outstanding mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. On October 9, 2017 she was called to be with her savior, Jesus Christ.
A funeral service for Betty will be held Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Moore Funeral Home, Arlington , Texas. An interment will occur Friday, October 13, 2017 at 9:30 AM at Dallas Forth Worth National Cemetery, Dallas , Texas.
Betty, A lifetime Texan, was born in Sweetwater, Texas. She lived in Odessa and Ranger but called Ft. Worth home until late in life (1995) when she discovered Callender Lake in East Texas. She graduated high school from Ft. Worth north side and attended Abilene Christian College for 3 years.
In 1952, she met the love of her life, C.A. Cockerell, III who was a member of the USAF stationed in Amarillo, Texas. After a whirlwind courtship they were married on September 5, 1953 in Ft. Worth, Texas by Betty’s father, who was a minister. This union lasted 64 years. For the next 26 years they traveled to many locations both stateside and overseas based on military assignments. During this period Betty had three children, a son, C.A. IV, and two daughters, Cynthia K, and Sherri L.
Throughout their marriage, Betty worked numerous civil service positions in support of the USAF, some positions requiring a top secret security clearance. She also participated in Brownies and was a Girl Scout troop leader as well as numerous civic & school organizations and little league activities in support of her children. C.A‘s career also required Bettys participation as he was selected to be chief master sergeant of the 9th weather reconnaissance wing and as chief master sergeant of 8th Air Force. She was the consummate hostess extending her gift of warm hospitality to every guest.
After C.A.’s retirement from the USAF he became Vice president for American Euro copter Corporation, a major helicopter company. All these positions required Betty to participate in hosting important customers such as State if Maryland governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State. Other customers included Clint Eastwood and Donald Trump, to mention a few.
Together, Betty & C.A. enjoyed retirement at Callender Lake in East, Texas where she was very active in social events. She was president of the Friendship Club, Queen Bee of the Red Hats and Volunteered to work at numerous other functions. She & C.A. even had the time to enjoy numerous cruises ranging from 5 to 62 days.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Weslie & Jessie Mickey, her brother Carl Wayne Mickey, and her son C.A. IV. She is survived by her husband C.A. Cockrell, daughter Cynthia K Lebrun and her husband John of Beavercreek Ohio, daughter Sherri L Gallant and her husband Tim of Mansfield, TX, daughter-in-law, Lynne Cockrell of Burleson, TX, 8 grandchildren & 8 great-grandchildren.
