Marvin W. Schaeffer, 79 a longtime resident of Arlington Heights, was born Feb. 28, 1933, in Chicago, to the late Herbert and Agnes (nee Feldman) Schaeffer, and passed away Dec. 28, 2012, at Midwest Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Arlington Heights, surrounded by his loving family. Marv was the beloved husband of the late Mary Lou (nee Raupp); loving father of Bernie W. (Mary), Donald A. (Debbie), Audrey M. (Martin) Spoerlein, Mary Kay (Lee) Cernuda and Susan A. (Joe) Vitulli; cherished grandfather of Carlie, Jamie, Evan, Eric, Andrew (Ayumi), Shannon, Meagan, Elise, Ben, Luke, Hannah, Madeline, Olivia, Marisa, Amy and Donny; and dear brother of William (Honey) Schaeffer. Marv grew up in Prospect Heights and attended St. James School in Arlington Heights. After graduating from Arlington High School, Marv worked for Rhodes Appliance in Prospect Heights, where he met his wife, Mary Lou Raupp. He then served in the Army for two years at the end of the Korean Conflict, specializing in firing 105mm Howitzers. Shortly after returning from the service, he and Mary Lou were married in 1955. Marv owned and operated Marv's Refrigeration Service in Arlington Heights for over 30 years, and on weekends played accordion in a band called the Twi-Lighters. He enjoyed Canadian fishing trips, golfing and flying the single engine Cessna airplane he co-owned. He also loved to take care of his yard; the birds there were always well fed. Marv was member of American Legion Post 208, the Des Plaines Elk's, the Knights of Columbus and a parishioner for over 75 years at St. James in Arlington Heights. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 2, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Prayers will be said Thursday, Jan. 3, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, proceeding to St. James Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, for a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery.
