Of Lafayette, Indiana
Jim Murphy, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2021, surrounded by his two daughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou. He was born in Chicago Illinois and graduated from St. Bede Academy. Jim graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN, and received his MSW from the University of Illinois - Chicago. Jim and Mary Lou were married in 1969 and lived the majority of their lives in Lafayette, Indiana. He is survived by his loving family: three sisters, two daughters, and their spouses, six grandsons, and multiple nieces and nephews.
Jim was passionate about social work and dedicated his life to helping others. He was a volunteer for the Peace Corps and spent two life-changing years in Gabon, Africa. Jim worked for Wabash Valley Hospital Mental Health Center the majority of his career and championed credentialing for social work licensure for the state of Indiana. While he received many accolades and recognition, including Office of the Governor’s Sagamore of the Wabash, he will be most remembered for his kindness, generosity, and inspiration to everyone that was fortunate to have known him.
Jim embodied Mister Rogers both in his character and preference for cardigans! Often, he was found behind the camera lens or huge video cameras back in the day! Behind the quiet exterior lay a witty, charming, loving, exceptional man. He sustained many lifelong friendships since childhood and was a trusted confidant to many. Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and a member of the choir. His hobbies included trains, travel, and spending quality time as "Papa" with his grandsons.
