Bernie served in the U.S. military in the Korean War earning an Army of Occupation Medal. He married his beautiful bride and soulmate in Chicago, Illinois in 1952. Bernie enjoyed a successful career at Jewel Food Stores until he retired nearly 40 years later.
Bernie enjoyed spending time with family, camping, golfing, going on cruises, and cooking - in which loved to put his own twist on the recipe.
Bernie is survived by his son Lonnie (Barb) Shafer; daughters Cindy (James) Mazzetti, Susan (Anthony) Ewald, and Debbie (Daniel) Nelson; grandchildren Sarah (Jeremy) Johnson, Julia (Joey) Fernandez, David (Ashton) Shafer, Evan Shafer, Dino Mazzetti, Mario Mazzetti, Robin (Joseph) Hansen, Fox Nelson, Logan Nelson, and Dylan Nelson; and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services and interment will be private.
