Born May 10, 1921 in New Jersey to Jay S. Dickerson and Mabel Scott Dickerson, Bob grew up on the east coast, graduated from Georgetown University and received his MA and PhD from UCLA before joining the Humboldt State University faculty in 1959 as professor of economics.
Bob was a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corps and recently traveled on the Northcoast Honor Flight to visit the WWII Memorial an experience he described as a highlight of recent years. He was an avid reader and writer and in his later years wrote and shared many poems with family and friends. He loved conversation especially at wine events and social gatherings. He will be remembered by many as a runner and founding member and of the Six Rivers Running Club.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ann and his younger brother Dan.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Margaret (Peggy) of Blue Lake, sons Dan (Jennifer), Francis (Lynne), Rich, and Robert Jay; daughters Mary Bullwinkel (Gene Genoar) and Cathy (Mike Matteri); grandchildren Michael (Heather), Joe, Lindsay, Andy (fiancee Janelle), Brian, Robert, Erica and Taylor; great granddaughter Rylie Anne; and east coast nephews and nieces Robert Merston, Douglas Merston, Suzanne, Joyce (Peter) Caruso and their families. He also leaves behind Pam Loveless, surviving partner of his brother Dan, and many he considered extended family.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Arcata at 1 pm Saturday, December 17, 2011.
