Gil was born January 29th, 1930 in Utica, Pennsylvania and was raised by mother, Lena Schmitt and grandparents Harper & Eleanor Hogg. He grew up on a small farm with his identical twin brother, Wilbert Smith, and sister, Virginia Heister. Gil had a long dedicated career as a machinist for over 44 years, he received his teaching certificate and became a machinist instructor in 1971. He worked as production and prototype machinist in the aircraft industry from 1948-1992 when he retired from the Hydraulic Research Company. He was married in 1949 to Beverly Bollinger for 26 years. Gil then remarried Tsuneko Edman in 1982 who was his life partner for 39 years until the time of his death.
Gil is survived by his wife, 1 son of his own, 3 sons & 2 daughters through marriage, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Besides spending time with his family, Gil had a passion for playing golf, riding motorcycles, country western dancing & was an antique car enthusiast. Gil had a bright cheerful personality and was known for his witty sense of humor which we all lovingly refer to as “Gilisms.” Gil thoroughly enjoyed visits with his loved ones, he had an impeccable memory and was always the light of conversation keeping all who interacted with him laughing. He touched many lives with his generosity, love and passion for life. He will be sorely missed.
The family will be holding a private Celebration of Life on November 28th, 2021.
