It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria LaFay Hoff Monday, beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, who went to be with her Lord on February 16, 2025 at the age of 97 in Apopka, Florida.
She was born on December 17, 1927, in Wayland, Kentucky to Ollie (Ross) and Clyde Beckam Hoff, Sr. She was also known by many affectionate nicknames. She was called “Morning Glory” by her mother, “Lo-Lo” by her brother, nieces and nephews, “Little’un” by her husband and friends, and “Mamaw” by her grandchildren.
Gloria met the love of her life, John Witcher Monday, while working at the Oak Ridge Hospital in Oak Ridge,Tennessee. They married on June, 23,1953, and she became mother to John’s two young sons. Gloria and John shared 51 years of love, faith, partnership and parenthood with a later addition of a daughter and son to their family. Over the years, they made homes in Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida, where they built a life filled with cherished memories.
As a faithful servant of God, Gloria was an active member of King Street Baptist Church in Cocoa, Florida, where she volunteered in the church nursery. In addition to her service to the Lord and her family, Gloria was a woman of great intelligence. She was class valedictorian for the Class of 1944 at Pulaski County High School in Burnside, Kentucky, graduating early in hopes of joining the Women's Army Air Corp before the end of WWII. The war having ended months before her graduation, she attended Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) in Williamsburg, Kentucky on a valedictorian scholarship where she earned her certification in Medical Technology.
Gloria worked as a Medical Technologist in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee before moving to Florida where she worked for 28 years in various roles including Medical Technologist, Laboratory Manager and Blood Bank Manager at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida. Through her work at Wuesthoff Hospital, she made a lasting impact on her colleagues and community, known for her work ethic and leadership.
Following her retirement, Gloria volunteered for many years with a non-profit organization in Cocoa, Florida that provided access to medical care for those who could not afford it. Gloria’s professional and personal achievements were a testament to her commitment, intelligence, and perseverance.
One example of her perseverance was her determination to learn to fly an airplane. She completed a solo flight in a single engine Beechcraft in 1970 at TiCo Airport as witnessed by her family along with pilots and passengers of an Eastern Airline jet waiting on the tarmac. After proving to herself she could do it, she never flew solo again.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, John Witcher Monday; mother, Ollie (Ross) Hoff; father, Clyde Beckam (CB) Hoff, Sr.; brother Clyde Beckam (CB) Hoff, Jr; and sons Steve Monday and Larry Monday. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Monday (Bill Roh); son, John M.
