Sonia Socorro Torres-Quinones (80) of Holly Springs passed away Saturday, October 23 at her home, surrounded by her loving spouse Sarah, her brother Rafi, sister-in-law Carmen and loving dogs Mango Lin and Sophie Merlot.
Born to the late Ernesto Torres and Aurea Quinones in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, Sonia was a restless young lady that joined the U.S. Army (Women's Army Corps) in 1965, subsequently serving in the U.S.A.R. until 1986. She gained experience as a Spanish teacher with Berlitz School of Languages and the Peace Corps in Puerto Rico, prior to getting her teaching degree from ECU in Greenville, N.C. Sonia taught Spanish in Harnett and Wake counties, impacting the lives of countless students and coworkers, with her outgoing and joyous personality and her passionate involvement in music endeavors and school sports. After retirement, she happily travelled the world, recruiting foreign teachers for service in the states of NC, GA, VA and KS. Many of those teachers became her good friends and still are to this day. She had a love for sports like no other, especially golf & baseball, specifically the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Sonia will always be loved and remembered for her selfless generosity and excellent cooking skills, that made her house the gathering place for everyone, young and old.
In addition to her parents, Sonia is preceded in death by her brother Ernesto and sister Deadina.
Sonia is survived by her loving wife Sarah (Saritah), brother Hector Rafael (Rafi), sister-in-law Carmen (Cambo), brother Samuel, nephews Ernesto and Antonio, nieces Carmen Laura, Sheila and Cathy.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 30 at 10 am with a memorial service celebrating her life to follow at 11 am at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. Apex, NC 27502.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to ASPCA.
