Sara McConnell Martin

Sara McConnell Martin, 56, of Holly Springs, passed away Friday, February 14th, 2020. Sara won her battle with leukemia after a three year fight. She entered heaven’s gates and her parent’s arms surrounded by her family.

Sara was born and raised in Cary, North Carolina to the loving parents of Carl Ed McConnell and Jean McConnell and older brother Eddie McConnell. She graduated from Cary high school in 1981 and then went to nursing school at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She began her career in nursing and ultimately worked in pediatrics for close to 15 years with other stops including Wilson medical center, Dorothea Dix mental hospital and Rex Hospital. She was a proud nurse for 34 years.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Martin of Holly Springs, Son Carl Martin(Megan) of McGee’s Crossroads, NC , Son Evan Martin of Minneapolis, MN, Mother in law, Charlotte Gray of Holly Springs, Mother and Father In law, Jay and Doris Martin of Cary, NC, Brother Eddie McConnell(Kay) of White Lake, NC, Niece Mandy Branch(Daniel) of Fuquay Varina and Niece Ashley McConnell and her son Johnathan of White Lake, NC and her biggest blessing her grandson Hudson. She is also survived by several aunts and uncles who have provided so much care these last few months.

Sara fought for the last three years after being diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. We as a family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at the UNC Cancer hospital. They treated Sara as their own and cared for her throughout her fight.

Sara’s church family at Baptist Grove Baptist Church in Fuquay Varina also provided so much for her and her family throughout the hospital stays and trips back and forth to Chapel Hill. Thanks to the countless other family members and friends for their support.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm - 8:00pm on Thursday, February 20th, 2020 at Apex Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 21st, 2020 at 11:00am with Pastor Ben Pearce officiating. Internment will immediately follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1621 NC 55, Fuquay-Varina, NC.

In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the UNC Cancer hospital and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
