Robert Lee Savage, Jr. of Apex peacefully left his earthly body on October 6, 2024 surrounded by family and the compassionate caregivers at the “Apex Neighborhood” memory care section of Sunrise Senior Living in Cary. Bob has joined his beloved Lord and Savior and reunited with his wife, Bernie, parents Robert Sr. and Gaynelle Savage of Saluda, North Carolina and brother Bill Savage of Canton, North Carolina.
Bob was born March 13, 1930 in Saluda and received his undergraduate and law degrees from Wake Forest College (now University). Bob and Bernie married in 1953 and spent their lives in Apex starting in 1956. Bob had a successful career as a real estate lawyer, mostly with the Savage & Godfrey Law Firm which he founded. He also served for a brief time as a district court judge with a reputation for being a strict but fair adherent to the law.
He was a vital part of the blossoming Apex community throughout his life and served as President of the Apex Recreation Commission, as well as President of the Apex Chamber of Commerce. He was an active and loyal member of Apex Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir and the “Voice of Praise“ singing group as well as teaching Bible study for 30 years.
Bob is survived by his three children and their spouses: Bobby Savage (Sharon) of Jupiter, Florida and Tina Savage Boyce (Steve) and Jerry Savage (Melody) both of Cary North Carolina. Papa was a loving grandfather to seven grandchildren and spouses—Terran Molina (Adolfo) of Hoover, Alabama and the other six who all live close by in Wake County— Ryan Boyce (Linsay), Stuart Savage, Chelsea Barry (Mark), Kristina Weatherly (Chris), Molly Edgington (John) and Carly Russ (Jordan). Great Papa also lives on in the hearts of 13 great grandchildren.
Bob was passionate about sports and spent many hours coaching and watching his kids and grandchildren. He was sometimes too passionate and in later years refused to watch Wake Forest play live, so we would tape the victories for him to watch later. It was his love for music and nature that sustained him through his later years but before his mind suddenly started failing in May, Bob let us know that his final goal was to end his life living longer than his father. Four hours before he passed away, as he lay unresponsive, we let him know that he had lived a wonderful life of 94 years 6 months and 23 days. This was exactly one day longer than his father!
We love you Bob, Dad, Papa, Great Papa but because you and Bernie taught us to love and accept Christ, we all expect to see you again someday.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Apex Baptist Church. Family will receive friends following the service at the barbeque luncheon.
