As in the Sinatra song,"My Way," Richard Steven Elwell lived and left life on his own terms. Born to second generation Scotch and Italian parents, Richard was raised to be self reliant, tough and accountable. His crusty exterior, however, hid a sweet and caring nature which was soon apparent to all after they "earned the right" to meet Richard's high standards.
Born near Plymouth, Massachusetts, Richard was a true New Englander. He loved fast motorcycles and fast cars and was a proud American and Patriots fan. One of five children, he had a scrappy upbringing with a strong work ethic and traditional values. As a young man, he was a prankster with friends choosing Elvis' "Hound Dog" as his theme song. Upon getting into partying trouble with the local police, he showed up at the jail demanding "a room with a view." He was a crack pool and poker player and loved the taste of a good cold beer--or maybe several! Throughout his life, friends would comment that his quick wit and dry sense of humor kept them laughing.
After his Silver Lake HS training in automotive skills, he went on to become a master brick mason and in that professional capacity, was lured to Raleigh-Durham in the 90's to build Southpoint Mall and other commercial buildings. In 2008, he took on the responsibilities as Property Manager for J E Booth Farms where he became a "legend" to that family, his appreciative tenants and surrounding community.
Richard was predeceased by his father, Frederick C. Elwell, and the love of his life, former wife MaryJo (McGrath) Kruse. He is survived by his mother, Dolores (Pederzani) Elwell Guidetti, his brothers Glenn (Alice) (Middleboro) and Todd (Halifax), sisters Marsha and Lori, and his accomplished son, Richard Vincent (Martha) (Clayton) of whom he was extremely proud. A raucous gathering to celebrate his life will be held at his NC Hwy 751 residence, 4-7 PM on 10/2/21 (call 919 971 6461 for location), and a memorial will follow in Massachusetts. His request to spread his ashes on the Mojave Desert along his beloved Route 66, will be honored by his son. Forever the 'bad boy,' rest in peace, Easy Rider.
