Nancy was born in Bryn Mawr, PA, on March 17 1925. She graduated from Haverford High School in Havertown, PA, in 1943, where she played both basketball and field hockey.
She was married on April 25, 1953, at Ardmore Presbyterian Church, Ardmore, PA, to John Allen Mitchell, Jr., and they enjoyed 60 blessed years together. During their marriage Nancy and John lived with their two sons, John III and Jim in Havertown (PA), Arlington Heights (IL), Fort Washington (PA), and St. Petersburg (FL).
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents James and Emma MacBurney, and her only sister, Mildred. She is survived by her sons, John Allen Mitchell III, James Logan Mitchell, and her daughter-in-law, Dale, as well as 7 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., with her last membership of 43 years at First Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg, FL.
Nancy was a homemaker all of her married life. She and John regularly hosted friends and family in their home and were known for their Derby Day parties for many years in PA and FL. She was an accomplished seamstress, who made clothes for her family, as well as for acquaintances and friends, including the wife of the U.S. ambassador to Australia. She was also an accomplished bridge player and regularly played with friends until she was 95.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church NC at 3:30 PM on Sunday, January 15, 2023. A private interment will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery–West in Bala Cynwyd, PA.
