Jon was a US Navy Veteran and served during the Korean War. He was an Aviation Electrician on Sky Raider planes and was assigned to the USS Bennington aircraft carrier.
He attended the University of Missouri in Columbia MO and graduated with a BSEE Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1962.
Jon married Sharon Highfill August 27, 1961 in Senath Missouri. They have two children, Tracey and Kevin.
He was first employed by General Electric and worked at McDonnell Aircraft in St Louis Missouri.
Next he was located in Groton Connecticut where he worked on installing firing mechanisms on Polaris Submarines.
In 1965 Jon lived in Cocoa Beach FL where he was responsible for installing and monitoring the fuel cells on the Gemini space shuttle. That fuel cell is now in the Smithsonian.
Waynesboro VA was the next destination where Jon worked as an electrical engineer for GE.
Jon and family then moved to Raleigh NC in the early 1970's where he worked for Exide Electronics and Powerware as a field engineer until retirement.
Jon had many interests. He was an avid tennis player and played varsity tennis for Missouri U. He continued to play for enjoyment and always watched all the big tournaments. He loved bass fishing, even when the fish didn't cooperate. He liked to read and was always buying new books. Dogs and cats were his passion and he had many rescues like his current dogs,Danny and Maggie. He loved them all and they were a constant joy in his life. In the years since retirement, Jon has enjoyed his life at
home and sharing it with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sharon Highfill Skelton. He is also survived by his daughter and her husband, Tracey Layne Skelton Scheltinga and Mark Scheltinga and his son, Jon Kevin Skelton and his wife, Maria Brinson Skelton. Jon was truly loved by his family.
