Jerry was born on October 8, 1930 in Chicago, IL to the late Edward and Cecilia Becker. He served four years in the Air Force during the Korean War. Jerry earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and worked for Argonne National Laboratory in the Applied Mathematics division in computer development. While there, he and a colleague coded Argonne’s node of the Arpanet (precursor to the Internet). Later in his career, he worked at the University of Chicago where his title was Project Manager, Networking and Large Scale Computing.
In addition to making major home renovations, Jerry could fix cars, electronics, appliances, plumbing… basically anything. Jerry enjoyed ragtime music, amateur radio Hamfests, restoring antique radios, and cruises/travel with his wife and family (many vacations at Callaway Gardens in Georgia).
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Bob, Cathy, and Mary Ann and three grandchildren.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Bernadette and children, Terri, Deb, Tom and Judy, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends and guests on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Apex Funeral Home. Following will be a funeral mass at 11:00 AM at Saint Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church. Jerome will be laid to rest at a later date at the Saint Andrew Columbarium.
