To the Lewis family, you have my greatest sympathy. I had the pleasure of meeting Howard at Pfizer Rocky Mount and he was truly a gentle giant. There was never a dull moment when our paths crossed.

Rick and I are deeply saddened by the news of Howard’s passing.  We’ve known him and the family for over 20years through church.  He was always smiling and had such a happy disposition whenever we spoke.  He and his sweet family have always had a special place in our hearts.  Sending love, prayers and virtual hugs to Cat, Howie and Anna.  Bless you all and treasure all your wonderful memories of him ♥️

Howard will certainly be missed. He was an excellent human being and good friend to me. My prayers are with the Lewis family during this difficult time. 

This world is a tad bit lonelier since my brother in Christ has gone on ahead to be with the Lord.  Howard and I were brothers in more ways than one. We also shared the love of pit-master grilling & hunting . We enjoyed cook-offs and watching Cat & Camille enjoy the feast while we traded grilling tips. Howard was an outstanding cook as well as a great shot. I'm not sure if they have a need for either in Heaven, but his presence was required by the Father. I will miss my friend and will think of him each time I light my pit. Rest in Heaven, Howard.

I have so many fond memories of Howard. He was such a great husband, father and friend. I got to know Howard when our girls were attending 1st grade. We spent so much time together during those early years. Our families camped, enjoyed eating good food and simply sitting under the stars as we blended one conversation into another. My most favorite memory was when the four of us were talking about heaven being a real place where we will be seen and known.  We spoke of people whom we loved that were not believers. As Cat & Ray allowed Howard and I to go with this conversation, the passionate person, that I had come to know and love, became teary-eyed as he reflected on loved ones and friends.  It was the most precious conversation I can ever remember having. He was diverse, thoughtful and exceedingly kind. I will, forever, fondly remember my friend with warm smiles. 

I’m still a little in shock that Howard is really gone.  I had always wanted to come to one of his Lew’s Smokehouse events, but I never made the time.  I first met Howard when Anna and Isaac were in Kindergarten together at AB Combs, probably at one of those Open House events.  We crossed paths many times over the years.  He coached my boys in football their first year playing tackle (they won the championship so He was clearly a great coach), but the thing I remember the most is that he was always welcoming, whether he was welcoming you into his home or welcoming you to football practice or just greeting you when you were out.  I’m pretty sure he never met a stranger, but if he did, you wouldn’t be a stranger for long!  I imagine that God’s got him on the welcoming committee in heaven because he’s so good at making people feel at home.  I know that he will be sorely missed here.  My deepest condolences to Cat, Anna and Howie.

I can so remember going to the Lewis' Houseboat at the Lake. I know my Brother Wayne Hanes will miss him dearly so many fond memories.  Our Condolences to the Family and Friends and Prayers for all as well.  God Bless 

How-man, remember when I gave you that nickname?  You totally loved it. They say when you give a friend a nickname it means you truly care & love them.  And trust me, I do care immensely for you and my kitty cat.  I still can’t believe I’m writing a memory for your passing.  You were taken from us way too early; I pray the good Lord needed you for something special. Rest in peace How-man. Thank you for being such a kind friend to me.

I met Howard when I started dating my now husband, Gary. He was always a jokester. He and Vince worked together at Sears, I think it was,  and they would program the computer to call Gary’s phone 50 times in a row to say his Sears order was ready! I am so sad that Howard is gone. But I am happy that he found such love with Cat and had two great kids out of that love. Howard, you are in the palm of His hand now. Rest in His peace.

I love this man and this family and am so sorry that he's fallen asleep sooner than I. Howard taught me a ton about hospitality (the last time I was with Howard he was hosting my family, including 2 children under 4, to a gourmet meal in his home!), humility, and friendship. In a world that feels full of disappointments and  duplicity, Howard has given me an example of a man/husband/father that I can strive to be more like. All the love

I could never summarize every single thing I felt about my dad into this one post, but I can try. My father was a big role model in my life, not because of his profession but because of his personality. I admired how he commanded a room, never swayed from his own opinions, and firmly believed in himself. Even after he’s gone, I know that in my memories, he will continue to be that for me. I will also remember him as a father that I felt like I could talk about anything to, who listened to me and treated me with respect, and paid attention to my own opinions and beliefs. He was a protector, a funny guy, a good father, and I really hope that his memory lives on, because he deserves nothing less. 

The picture below is the last picture of him I took on my phone. I think it captures how he was always willing to do things I asked to make me laugh, and how he was a big guy that commanded respect.

I’ll always miss you.

Howard was such a kind man. With his cheerfulness and giant personality (and height!) he always managed to make me laugh. We worked together on several occasions and he would always come to me and call me OGO (oh great one) any time he had a question. His nicknames were so endearing and he came off as a genuinely caring man. I am devastated by his loss as is all of Sanford. When he offered to bring me a cutlass and pistol following my eye surgery (I had a wicked black eye patch on), I knew I had a friend for life. 

Dear Cat and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all now-please know that I am here for you at this time as well.  Howard was an incredible man, and the gifts and legacy he left for all will never be lost-thinking of you all now.

Howard and Cat were my neighbors and are dear friends.  We’ve shared many great memories together.  Howard was the best host I’ve ever known!  At one party they had he dressed as a bartender and would make any drink you would want!  He truly loved people and loved laughter.   I will always treasure our times together, and especially being a good friend to my husband Tony.

I am so sorry to learn of Howard.  Every picture of I saw of you together seemed like you lived an amazing and loving life. Anyone could see that he had major presence and not having him here, I am certain, is such a loss for everyone who knew him. Please accept my sincere condolences and God bless you all. May you find comfort, in Him, during this difficult time. 

Howard was a beacon of light to us all! I met 
Cat and Anna first and then our Howard. They needed child care services as Howie was going to be here very soon! Howard, Cat and little Anna (18mo) came over for my interview. When I saw Howard, I knew they were sent to me from our Lord to help me with the death of my husband (just the year before) It has been years of wonderful times, laughter, watching their two beautiful children grow! Howard made everything we did meaningful and joyous! He was a very Special Man!
