The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at Apex Funeral Home, with a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Apex Cemetery, at the corner of Upchurch and West Moore streets.
Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Chatham County, to the late Lee Roy and Virginia Jones Mitchell. He married Estelle Iona Sauls on Jan. 9, 1954. For most of his working years, he was the owner-operator of G.L. Mitchell Trucking, traveling as far as California to deliver and pick up produce. In addition, Garland was employed by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Bridge Department and Carolina Refrigerated Trailer Sales. His most recent employment was working part-time with the N.C. Department of Agriculture at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.
In his younger years, he was an active member of the Apex Jaycees. Garland enjoyed RV camping with his wife and their circle of friends. A member of Apex Baptist Church, he also sometimes drove the church bus for the seniors.
In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Autry and Johnny Mitchell; and his mother- and father-in-law, Sallie Belle and Ernest Sauls.
Surviving are his wife of almost 66 years, Estelle S. Mitchell, of Apex; daughter, Faye M. Dasen, and her husband, Alan, of Aberdeen; son, Randy S. Mitchell and his wife, Kim, of Apex; brother, Stanley Mitchell and his wife, Kay, of Louisburg; brother-in-law, Watson Sauls and his wife, Becky, of Cary; four grandchildren, Wesley Dasen, Lenora Dasen Hatfield (Seth), Hunter Mitchell and Christopher Mitchell; two step-grandchildren, Kacie and Jake Lay; and four great-grandchildren.
