Elva (Nanny) Ours Maynard, 92, beloved mother, grandmother, family matriarch, and friend died Thursday, January 6, 2011 following a brief illness with her family at her bedside. Elva was born in Moorefield, West Virginia and was the daughter of Elmer Day Ours and Hattie Virginia Getz. She attended business school in Cumberland, WV and moved to Raleigh where she worked for the Farm Home Security Bureau. She married her husband, John H. Maynard on December 7, 1941. He preceded her in death on December 25, 1980. Elva retired from the Town of Apex where she was the Town Clerk and Clerk of Court. She was a devoted member of the Apex Baptist Church. Elva treasured her friends and kept in touch with them through the Church and Sunday School Class, the Apex Golden Age Club, and her frequent bridge and card groups. She was proud to have been the originator of the Apex Town slogan, “Apex, the Peak of Good Living”.
Elva is survived by her daughter Donna Walker and her husband Stephen of Cary, and her son John H. Maynard, Jr. and his wife Diane of Apex. She has four grandchildren, Michelle (Shelley) McCain and her husband Brad of Raleigh, Karen Igou and her husband Jamie of Wilmington, DE, Daniel Maynard and his wife Alicia of Fuquay, and Jason Maynard and his wife Veronika of Cary. Elva was also blessed with four great grandchildren, Nicholas Berry, Brandon McCain, Sydney McCain and Caleb Igou and one great, great grandchild, Brayden Berry. Elva is also survived by her brother Harold Ours of Severna Park, MD and sister, Mary Lee Burch of Milford, DE. She will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at Apex Funeral Home on Monday, January 10 at 11:00. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home following the service. A private inurnment will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of her husband, John H. Maynard, Sr.
