Doris Mildred Nanney Winstead, affectionately known as “Dot”, passed away on Friday morning, November 1, 2024, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Apex, North Carolina. Born on May 11, 1936, in Pitt County, North Carolina; she was the daughter of the late Otis Nanney and Mildred Fulford Nanney.
While in high school Dot played basketball and participated in various activities. After high school, Dot worked as a typist/stenographer for the FBI. She raised her two children while working as a bank teller and substitute teacher. When her children were older, she worked for and became manager of the Public Housing Authority in Farmville, NC and then for a private apartment complex in Greenville, NC.
Dot played bridge all her life, enjoyed travelling with friends and spending time with family. Her favorite activities at the Apex Senior Center were exercise classes and Wii bowling where she was often the high scorer. She enjoyed movie nights with her good friend Tom and outings with her dear friend Carol.
Dot is remembered by her son: Wayne Winstead and his wife Cara, of Cary; by her grandson Noah Winstead and his wife Tanika, of Raleigh; many nieces and nephews; and many friends in eastern North Carolina, Apex, and the surrounding area.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Wynette Winstead, sisters Lib Worthington and Lois Sain and brothers Ray Nanney, Robert Nanney, and Carl “Sam” Nanney.
Graveside services for her family and close friends will be held in Farmville at the Hollywood Cemetery, Friday November 8, 2024 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Dot to the Apex Senior Center at 63 Hunter Street, Apex, NC, 27502.
