Charlene, a native of Elizabethtown, NC, was born on November 28, 1965 to her parents, Charles L. Byrd Sr. and Jewel Byrd. Charlene is a graduate of her beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Family was Charlene’s top priority. She treasured family vacations to the beach, and she will be remembered every time one of our traditions is repeated there. She loved her children. Their birthday parties were events. Her neighborhood pumpkin carving parties at Halloween ran for years. A great joy before her illness was becoming a babysitter for her own children’s sitter. Charlene was serious about organized files and notebooks at home and work. Charlene explored arts and crafts. Quilts were a passion and she made decorative painting look effortless. She loved good food. She will be missed.
Charlene will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Mickey Sartin; daughter, Emily Caroline Sartin; son, Aaron Sartin; daughter-in-law, Grace Lee; parents Charles L. Byrd Sr. and Jewel Byrd; and brother Charles L. Byrd Jr.
Charlene wanted no public service held until the end of the pandemic. A small, private service will be held Saturday, Feb. 6 and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. March 11, 2021 would have been Mickey and Charlene’s 26th wedding anniversary. Those who would like to make a gesture of remembrance should place a pink flamingo in front of their home on that date. Pink flamingos made Charlene smile.
Memorial contributions may be made to Miriam’s House (https://www.miriamshouseprogram.org/donate) and Camp Kum-Ba-Yah (https://www.campkumbayah.org/donate). Both are located in Lynchburg, Virginia where Mickey and Charlene made their first home.
