Alan, the most hardworking and loving husband, father, and grandfather, is survived by his wife, Anita; his daughters Tracey (Wesley) and Eleanor (Matt); his grandchildren, Meredith (Jeffrey), John Alan, Elijah, and Asher; his sister Elaine; and several other special friends and family.
Upon graduation from Troutman High School, Alan went on to North Carolina State University to earn a BA and MA in Biological Sciences. During his time in Raleigh, he met his wife, Anita. After graduating from NC State, he went on to University of Georgia to earn his PhD in Entomology.
After moving for work, he and Anita settled in Sanford, North Carolina where they raised Tracey, Eleanor, and Meredith.
In true Alan fashion, he chose to donate his body to the Western Carolina University Forensic Anthropology Body Farm.
To honor Alan’s memory, we are holding a celebration of his life at 2:00 on Saturday, October 14 at Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Sanford. We invite anyone who knew him to attend. To honor Alan’s no-nonsense, no-frills attitude, we ask attendees to not wear black. Instead, we prefer you wear ultra-casual clothes that remind you of Alan. The family will receive guests in the Sanctuary, Narthex, and Parlor immediately following the service.
While flowers are welcome, please consider donating to Parkinson’s research, Dementia research, the North Carolina Zoo, or the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Alan’s name.
Following the service, the celebration of life will continue at Hugger Mugger Brewing in Sanford at 4:00.
Addresses can be found below within service details.
Please note that due to Street Fest, a few streets in Downtown Sanford will be closed. Carpooling is advised.
