John loved his technology.   He always had the best TV (and the biggest), Dolby surround sound, ROKU, Fire Stick, 3D……the salesmen at Best Buy knew him by name.   

But cell phones and computers were another matter.  The Geek Squad had to come to the rescue many times.

One of the funniest memories for both Tina and I, was the Google Salesman patiently trying to help John set up his voice activated phone.  John was so excited, he was getting a new phone that he could talk to, ask questions, and it would talk back.   All John could think of was asking his phone about the weather back in Lafargeville, New York.   He had it so set in his mind that he wasn’t really listening to the salesman.  The salesman explained that before you can start talking to your phone, the phone needs to learn your name by voice.   When the salesman asked John to say his name into the phone, John happily responded by saying, “Google, how’s the weather in New York?”.   After the third try, I was laughing so hard I had to leave the store.   I’m not sure how many times it took, but the phone eventually got set up. 

I will miss John so much, but will always be able to think of John and laugh.


John loved to fish, but he loved eating fish even better....especially walleye.  One of our last conversations was about ice fishing on Mille Lacs......John told me to catch enough so that we could have a fish fry.

John and Liz liked to take drives around town.  And John never let things like directions and maps get in his way……..so they often got lost.  But they were never afraid of asking strangers for directions and were always amazed by how nice people were and how willing to help.    We eventually bought John and Liz a Magellan for their car so they could always find their way home.   John loved it…….he was especially appreciative of the nice lady from Australia……she was so polite.    Ha!

Papa John was so proud of both his grandkids - Sara & Alex.   John and Liz hardly ever missed a soccer game when the kids played at the Blaine Sports  Center.
