I think about going into Grandpa's woods to pick black raspberries as an annual family event that included all the moms and kids from our two families as well as the Freebys.
 
And then there was Bumville (founded by my older siblings) and Bum Hill City that Ken Freeby and I discovered, named, and founded as a sister city to Bumville.  How many hours did we spend in those fabulous settlements?
 
Memories are wonderful things, and your family plays such a wonderful part in so many of my fondest memories.  And Auntie Leenie was the bestest, by far my favorite aunt.  You could have asked me any time in my whole life who my favorite aunt was, and the answer would always have been the same - Auntie Leenie.
 
We will miss her so much as we do all those who have gone before us.  But we all need to treasure our memories of those we have loved.  They are a blessing.

When I hear that someone close to me that I loved so much has died, my mind starts to spin through the past.  So, last Saturday when I heard that my Auntie Leenie had died, I began to think about everything I could remember about growing up across the road from you guys.
 
Minds are strange things, I guess.  And mine focused on a memory of the years between 1958 and 1961.  Maybe not every afternoon, but as often as I could, I hurried across the road to your house to watch "Edge of Night" with your mom.  It was a soap opera, but also a crime drama as a take-off to Perry Mason.  Your mom and I both loved the show and watched it together with great interest for the outcome of each crime.  
 
Of course, there are a thousand or two other memories I have.  After all, we did grow up within a few hundred feet of each other.  But, for whatever reason, this is the one that jumped out at me this week.  Here are a few others that rolled through my brain:
 
I remember the time my dad was playing bear with us which could only be played in the dark of night with all the lights out in the house.  He hid in the basement, and we would sneak down the stairs until he came out roaring.  We'd race back to the living room, screaming.  Your dad got worried when he saw the dark house and heard the screaming from across the road and came to see what in the world was going on.


What a small world. I found the information online for auntie Leen. I’m sorry we can’t be with you. Shari has arranged for flowers to express our love and support for each of you. God bless you as you gather tomorrow at first Baptist. I have many fond memories of auntie Leen babysitting for me as a kid and of family times through the years since then. 
We will keep all of you in our prayers.
