She was born July 24th, 1929 in Akron, Ohio to Chester Murray and Jessie Cole. Her family moved to Alabama when she was a child and raised her and her 5 siblings in Rabbittown.
After graduating high school at 17, she left home and got married to James “Little Man” Horton. Together they had 3 children and were married for 67 years. Virginia worked her entire life until she was almost 90 years old. Her career included 19 years at Kitchens, 11 years at Southern Tool, and a total of 22 years at Martin’s Family Clothing.
The most important things in life to her were her relationship with the Lord and her family. She began and ended each day reading her Bible and devotional. As a faithful member of Coldwater Baptist Church for over 60 years, Virginia demonstrated her service to the Lord daily in her love towards all, whether through a hug, a laugh, or sharing her delicious homemade fried apple pies.
Not knowing a stranger, she could strike up a conversation with anyone. Her love for people poured out of her in a constant flow, and because she enjoyed being social, she worked at her various jobs well past her retirement!
Virginia found great pleasure in the simple things of life-conversations, family dinners, and time spent on her porch! She welcomed all as family. If she wasn’t enjoying the beauty on her porch, she could be found listening to gospel music by The Gaithers, Goodman Family, and the Blackwood Brothers.
She is loved and will be greatly missed!
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, her son Terry, sisters Florence and Francis, brother Kenneth, and great grandsons Alex and Caleb.
She’s is survived by son Wayne Horton, daughter Pamela Crawford, sisters Barbara Rowan and Evelyn Pilkington, sister-in-law Juanita Curvin (Sam); grandchildren Hubert Horton, David Horton, Lashay Vardaman, and Joshua Crawford (Emilee); great grandchildren Tyler Horton, Brooklyn Vardaman, Stephanie Horton, Briauna Thompson, Jaydon Thompson, and Gracelyn Crawford, and great-great grandchildren Kyran Boyd, Charlie Horton, and Kingston Boyd; many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Horton will be Saturday, July 10th, 2021, 2:00 p.m. at Coldwater Baptist Church with Pastor Jackie Morgan, Pastor Clyde Pettus, and Pastor Garan Mason officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The family will welcome friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
