Funeral service for Mrs. Ruth Sparks Mason, 87, of Anniston, will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Gray Brown-Service with Rev. David Teel and Rev. Peter Hawker officiating. Private burial will follow at Forestlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Mrs. Mason died Wednesday evening at her residence.
Survivors include son, James Ronald Mason and wife Lucia B. of Anniston; grandchildren, James R. Mason III and wife Anne Marie, Steven Hughes Mason, and Laura Elizabeth Mason of San Francisco bay area; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mason is preceded in death by her husband Hughes Mason; parents, Robert A. and Allie Golden Sparks; eight brothers and sisters including her beloved sister Helen Sparks Vaughan.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be, Henry P. Baugh, James Whatley, Gene S. Harris, Steven H. Mason, James R. Mason III, William Martinez, Henry P. Baugh Jr., Howard Schutz, M.M. Character, Clyde Hoover and the U.S Army Military Police.
Mrs. Mason was a native and lifetime resident of Anniston. She retired as administrative assistant to the Provost Marshal at Ft. McClellan during her service with the Department of Defense, which was with the U.S. Army Military Police. She was an active member for many years of McCoy United Methodist Church and was member of the UMW. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Golden Belles of Ft. McClellan. Mrs. Mason was the first person to receive the Commanding General’s Outstanding Service Award at Ft. McClellan.
