Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 2nd, at Post Oak Baptist Church in Alexandria, with Brother Larry Bollinger officiating. Visitation is open to family and friends prior to the funeral from 10 am-11 am. Burial will follow at Edgemont Cemetery in Anniston.
Phil Hopkins was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Dee Troy and Mattie Hopkins on October 26th, 1950. He was the youngest of 13 children. After high school, Phil joined the U.S. army, where he served the United States of America for 20 years. Phil was a Sergeant First Class in the 227th Transportation Company and served 3 tours in Germany and combat in the Vietnam War. After retirement from the Army, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and traveling to the mountains. He shared many years of his life with his wife, Shirlynn Hopkins. He was an active member of his church at Post Oak Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. Phil was a devout Christian who shared the love of Christ with anyone he met. Phil was baptized in the Caribbean Sea in Belize during a mission trip and hoped to bring peace to all who knew him, that he would meet them again one day in the presence of the Lord.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Dee Troy and Mattie Hopkins, and siblings, Pearl Finley, Essie Hopkins, Jessie Hopkins, Virgie Hopkins, T.J Hopkins, A. Howard Hopkins, Glenn Hopkins, L. Annette Patterson, Noland Hopkins, and David Hopkins.
Phil is survived by his wife, Shirlynn Hopkins; children, Jackie Clifton (Donovan), Jeanea Lowery (Eddie), and Bryan Breland (Jennifer); grandchildren, DeShae Sharpton, Kristin Rivers (Cody), Summer Vera (Cody), Rachael Clifton, Austin Sanstead, Jack Breland, and Sam Breland; great-grandchildren, Brayden Rivers and Emalyn, Sofia, Chelsea, Elena, and Isabela Hipolito; siblings Betty Strassner and Larry Hopkins; and brother in Christ, Ricky Little.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Bollinger, Scott Carlisle, Adam Harvey, Hunter Harvey, Brandon Rich, and Wilson Richardson.
Flowers can be delivered to Post Oak Baptist Church in Alexandria, or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Post Oak Baptist Church youth ministries in memory of Phil Hopkins. The family of Phil Hopkins wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Brother Larry Bollinger and the church family at Post Oak Baptist Church, Enhabit Hospice of Gadsden (Dr. Reiland, Kayla, Stacy, and Suzanne), and McGuffey’s Healthcare nurses and C.N.A’s for the love and care shown to Phil and our family during this time.
