A celebration of life for Lynn E. Smith will be held at his graveside at Jacksonville City Cemetery on Saturday, November 4th, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
Mr. Smith was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Jake Ewell Smith and Gladys Corine Smith. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1969 with a degree in History. This started his lifelong passion for travel, history, geography, genealogy, camping, sailing, and experiencing different cultures around the world. After graduation, he served his country in the Air Force and then joined the Army and Air Force Exchange Services as a career. He was stationed in distant points around the globe: Texas, New Mexico, England, Germany, Florida, the Philippines, and Okinawa. Mr. Smith retired in 2001 and settled in Alexandria. Once retired he enjoyed motorcycle rides to favorite destinations: New Orleans, Daytona, Key West, and Sturgis. In addition to being a voracious book reader, he also enjoyed fishing, hunting, genealogy research and Civil War reenactment. One of Lynn’s most cherished memories was participating, in full Confederate soldier regalia, in the internment ceremony of the entire CSA H.L. Hunley submarine crew in Charleston, South Carolina. Lynn was a proud member and highly active in the East Alabama Shriner’s Club and enjoyed his time fundraising for hospitals located around the country. Known to family and friends for having a fantastic smile, hat collection, and lover of graphic t-shirts, his wit, humor, and unbounded wisdom will be missed by those he loved and those who loved him.
He was a member of the Post Oaks Springs Baptist Church in Alexandria and Pastor Bollinger was a source of comfort and peace for Lynn in his final days. He always said, “life is about the journey and not the destination,” and to him we say “outstanding.”
Survivors include his wife of forty years, Charlotte Smith; his brother, Garry (wife-Jeannette, nephew-Randy); two daughters, Elizabeth and Christina (husband-Darrin, son-Landon); four stepchildren, Debbie, Jerry, Tracie (husband-Craig), and Kellie (husband-Greg); and twelve step grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Duke Masonic Lodge #574 or to the Alexandria Lodge #802.
