
A beloved family man and caring doctor to many, Dr. Lee Samuel Smith, Jr. passed away on June 6, 2013 at home with his loving wife Mavis. He was born in Tullahoma, TN, on April 5, 1930 to Lee Samuel Smith, Sr. and Lillie Mae Bennett Smith. Dr. Smith graduated from Tullahoma High School in 1948, and completed his undergraduate degree at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville, TN. He then graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis in 1956, and he completed his residency at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.
Dr. Smith served his country as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force for 4 years after graduating from medical school. He then opened Woman’s Clinic where he served the Anniston community from 1964 until 1988. He was a beloved OB/GYN who loved bringing life into the world. He was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Anniston. Dr. Smith had a lifelong desire to serve the Native American community, and he moved to Claremore, OK in 1988 to serve at the Indian Health Service until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Smith was an avid gardener. His favorite times were growing a Summer vegetable garden, growing his beautiful roses, or spending time in his greenhouse.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mavis Smith; his daughters and their families, Belinda Conaway and her husband, Don, and their children, Callie and Charles; Lisa Smith; Cindy Brushaber and her husband, Peter; and Debbie Kirkwood and her husband, Andy.
A private memorial service will be held by his family with internment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations can be made to the Calhoun County Humane Society in Anniston or the Parkinsons Association of Alabama.
