Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine “Jo” Elizabeth Jordan Mitchell, age 102, of Birmingham, will be Wednesday, May 24th, 2022, 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of Gray Brown-Service Mortuary. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family would like to welcome friends at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Mitchell passed away May 21, 2022 at her daughter's home in Oneonta, Alabama.
Jo is survived by her daughter JoAnne (Charlie) Frederick; granddaughters, Jonnee Mitchell (Sanford RosenBloom), Angie (Jerome) Zazzera, Monica (Leo) Deason, Jennifer (Jeff) Quick, Carmen (Michael) Nebrasky; Great Grandchildren Dr. Renae (Brenden) Mitchell Costigan, William "Billy" (Gypso) Mitchell, Marleigh (Clay) Carden, Savannah Deason, Laurin (Bradley) White, Lexi Friday, Cole Quick, Jessica and John David Friia,Jake, Sam and Eli Nebrasky; great-great grandchildren, Corinne Costigan, Evelyn White, Kimberly Friia, Greer, Cruze and Bowie Carden.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Master Sergeant John H. Mitchell; son Johnny Mitchell and his wife Sherri Mitchell;
Brothers, Hewlitt Jordan, James Jordan, Lamar Jordan, and Dan Jordan; Sisters, Annie Laura Snider, Ruth Campbell, Lorene Harris, Dela Story, and Carol Houston.
In 1944 she met Master Sergeant Mitchell at Fort McClellan where they were later married. They were assigned to several military bases including a year spent in Seoul, Korea. Srgt Mitchell returned to Korea in 1950 where he gave his life in battle during the Korean War.
Jo was a member of Roebuck drive United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and a fan of The Auburn Tigers and The Baltimore Ravens. She was a 54 year survivor of breast cancer. Above all, the things she loved most were her family and her country.
Special thanks to her great-granddaughter, Savannah Deason and friend Sarita Whitney for their loving care over the last two years.
