Gary is survived by his wife, Belinda Mangum; son, Eddie (Jennifer) Mangum, daughter; Tasha Breland (Greg); sister, Bettye Mangum; grandchildren, Jillian Breland, Ashlee Romines, Hannah Romines, Kendall Breland, and Cameron Mangum; nieces and nephews, Jerry Davis (Stephanie) and Beth Harris (Jeff). He is preceded by his father, Edward Mangum and mother, Rena Varey Mangum.
He was well known and respected for his willingness to help others; Gary would truly give someone the shirt off his back. He was a simple man with a huge heart.
He wasn’t fancy, and it didn’t take much to make him happy. He was also a hard worker. He began his career at Johnson’s Muffler Shop in Anniston at an early age, eventually becoming the owner.
When he wasn’t working, he spent a great deal of time fishing. He was a sight to behold with matching paint on his bass boat and his El Camino.
He loved to cook and wanted to share his food, always inviting others to gather around his table. He delivered homemade cakes to family and friends, even when that meant he had to pull his chair close to the stove because he was unable to stand for more than a few minutes while he baked.
He was a man of few words, but when he did speak, his words were worth hearing. He was quick with a joke and had an infectious laugh. He found ways to connect with and form a bond with everyone he encountered, whether it was a waitress at the Chevron One Stop at Crystal Springs or the nurses caring for him in his final days.
He found joy through spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. Though it was difficult for him to travel and walk, he was there. Whether that meant enduring long days at softball tournaments, watching show choir performances, or being surrounded by 50 teenage girls at a birthday party, Pops was there. He would quickly tell you that being Pops was his favorite role. He loved his granddaughters and grandson dearly.
In lieu of flowers family request you make donations to Wellington First Baptist, 826 Wellington Road, Wellington, AL 36279.
Gary will be missed by many. His family and friends find peace knowing that he is now healed and with our Lord and Savior. We look forward to the day we see him again.
