Born May 28, 1925, in Anniston, her lifelong home, she graduated from Anniston High School in 1943 and went to work for Warnock Furniture Company as bookkeeper and office manager, continuing to work for the Warnock's in other capacities after the local store closed. Dorothy also remained loyal to her alma mater, attending all pre-Covid Pandemic "Grand Reunions," which were special events for everyone who had been out of school for 50 years or more.
Dorothy Married Clark Hanvey August 17, 1948, at Carpenter United Methodist Church, where she had become the church pianist at age 18. She later would serve as organist, as well, until the church closed, at which point she moved her membership to McCoy United Methodist-- and continued to play until she was forced into "retirement" when she broke her arm in November of 2021! She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School at both churches, rarely missing a Sunday. She also was a lay-leader representative at the United Methodist Annual Conference for many years, attending her last one in June of 2019, She was truly committed to her faith, and took her duties very seriously.
A cheerful, intelligent, and energetic person who avowed that she simply could not get going in the mornings without her first cup of coffee, Dorothy also was an avid traveler, and an active member of the Anniston Credit Women and the Anniston Pilot Club, until the latter disbanded; after that she continued to meet for monthly lunches with several of its other members. In addition, she was an honorary member of the Alabama Power Energizers. She loved cookies and KitKats and Hershey's Kisses, and a chocolate milkshake from Jack's maybe most of all. And there was Always a Tub of Cool Whip in the fridge! Dorothy and Clark were married until his death on April 3, 1976. Mrs. Hanvey, as was known to the greater Oxanna community, also was preceded in death by her parents Vester Mandiver Martin, Sr., and Cora McAdams Martin, and their stillborn son, Dorothy's baby brother John Thomas Martin; her younger sisters Mattie Katherine "Kay" Ellis, Sarah Nelia Gambill, and Patricia CoraLynn Martin; and her younger brother Vester Mandiver Martin, Jr.
While she did not have any children of her own, "Aunt Dorothy" enjoyed her 15 nieces and nephews, and 20 great- and 18 great-great nieces and nephews, particularly at the extended family's annual Thanksgiving gathering, when all would tell stories and make music together. Two nephews, Joseph "Joe" Martin Gambill and James "Jim" Harold Young, Jr., preceded her in death.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Phyllis Dillman, owner/stylist at Classic Beauty Salon, and the staff of Autumn Cove and Gentiva Hospice.
Visitation for Mrs. Hanvey will be at McCoy United Methodist Church, 2600 Brighton Ave, Anniston Al. 36207 on February 25, 2023, beginning at 12pm. The funeral service, also at the church, will begin at 1:30 pm. The Rev. Marian New will officiate; members of the family will serve as pallbearers. A graveside service will be held immediately after at Forestlawn Gardens in Anniston.
