Winnie Elizabeth (Shaffer) Hall, 80, of Cape St. Claire and previously of Boalsburg, PA, died July 14, 2023, in her home, of natural causes. She was born February 16, 1943, in Shamokin Hospital, Shamokin, PA, to the late Kimber C. and Ada Dorothy (Palmer) Shaffer. In 1962, she graduated from Shamokin High School in Shamokin, PA, and later in life she attended AACC to receive certification in early childhood care and worked at the child care facility (1981-1999) on the grounds of AACC, along with Cape Kids Corner at her church.
As a teen, Winnie was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and had ambitions to become a flight attendant (stewardess back in the day). Life took a different route for Winnie and she married Bruce Hall, in their home town of Shamokin, PA, in September 1962. They settled in Boalsburg, PA, had their four girls and the family became life long Penn State fans!
Winnie was a life member of the international woman’s group of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. As of late, she was at the highest degree of TORCHBEARER. Winnie held every position with in her local chapter, Laureate Lambda, she worked on all the committees and was honored as WOMAN OF THE YEAR on multiple occasions.
As a mother of girls, Winnie was active in the scouting program while her children were participants. When her girls grew, she was a “Band Mom” while three of her daughters were at Broadneck High School. She enjoyed her interaction with the band members and treated them like “her” kids. Winnie spent many years chaperoning the band to games and competitions; she sewed uniforms and made/sold/delivered hoagies.
When her children started having children, Winnie learned the art of quilting. She wanted to leave a special gift that she had a hand in making to each of her family members.
She is survived by her four daughters, Valerie Leigh Máriássy and husband Béla of Crownsville, MD; Bonnie Joy Lingelbach and husband Troy of Nottingham, MD; Holly Lynn Houghton and husband Erik of Queenstown, MD and Shari Jeanne Jones, Prince Federick, MD. She is also survived by her brother, Wm. Shaffer (Marlene) of South Hadley, MA and sister-in-law, Anita Shaffer of Shamokin PA. Winnie was a grandmother 12; Jeremy Arkley (Jennifer) and Jaron Arkley (preceded her in death); Andrew and Jacob Lingelbach; Joseph (Esther), Melissa (Ryan Kittle), Jennifer (Jarrod Steve), Louis and James Houghton; and Sara, Laura and Joshua Jones. She was also Gigi (great-grandmother) to five; Brookelynn and Brycen Arkley, Isabella Houghton, and Winter and Sylvia Kittle. Winnie was a nurturing figure to her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, friends and relatives of her children, neighborhood and church children.
Winnie had been attending Cape St Claire UMC since her move to Maryland. She was active with the UMW, while it was active and had held all the offices. She also participated in Golden Gang and helped the group with the planning of the monthly events for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce T Hall; grandson, Jaron Arkley, Oahu, HI; a sister, Jane Anne Arbogast, Mechanicsburg PA; brothers Kimber C Shaffer, Jr., Shamokin, PA, and Francis Shaffer, CA.
There will be a memorial service on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 2 pm. At Cape St Claire United Methodist Church, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive, Cape St. Claire, Annapolis MD. 21409. There will be a brief gathering in the Fellowship Hall after the service to spend time with the family.
