

Collison, Walter N., Jr., LTCOL, USMC RET. of Annapolis, MD, age 82, died Thursday, March 31st at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Known by his family and friends as “Walt” or “Collie”, Walter was born in Annapolis, MD to the late Walter N. and Sarah Ethel Collison. He attended Germantown Elementary School and Annapolis Senior High School, where he graduated in 1953. He met his bride of 59 years, the former Mary Winn Reade of Durham, NC while they were attending the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He joined the Marine Corps in 1957 and was selected for regular commission while attending OCS and served in Vietnam, June 1965 –July 1966 and Sept.1969 – Sept. 1970. Retiring from the Marine Corp in 1979 after 23 years of honorable service, Walt was very proud of his career as both an Intelligence and Infantry officer. A “jack of all trades”, Walt enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, working in his yard, was a fan of the Orioles and Ravens but most of all the University of North Carolina Basketball. In addition to his wife Mary (Mimi), Walt is survived by his sister Becky Creighton of Annapolis; nieces, Judy Mathew, Colorado Spring, CO; Jan Arntz, Denton, MD; Julie Loos, Ballwin, MO and Jane Dalton, Raleigh, NC; nephew, Collison Stewart, Cincinnati, OH; brother-in-law Frank Reade, Durham, NC and a grandson, Collison Thomas Liles. There will be no services held, but Walt’s wife, Mimi will receive friends on Saturday, April 9th from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD. No flowers are requested but memorial donations in Walt’s name can be made to the National Museum of the Marine Corps, ATTN: Curatorial Services Department, 2014 Anderson Ave., Quantico, VA 22134-5002 or to a charity of your choice.
