Vito A. Capuco passed away due to congestive heart failure, while surrounded by family at his Annapolis home on September 13, 2014. Vito was born in the Bronx, NY on August 18, 1921. He and Albert were the children of Anthony and Elvira. Vito graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx and he received a BS degree in engineering from the City College of New York after WWII. During the war, he was a lieutenant in the Army Air Force, where he served as a navigator and radar specialist. He was deployed to the European theater with the 81st Troop Carrier Squadron, with which he participated in battles and campaigns including the Normandy Invasion, Operation Market Garden, Rome-Arno, as well as the evacuation of survivors from Nazi concentration camps. After the war, Vito married his childhood sweetheart, Rose Marie, with whom he was happily married for 67 years. In 1960, Vito and Rose moved the family to Sea Cliff, NY, where they lived for 41 years. Their contributions to charitable work and community service were recognized in 2000 when Rose and Vito received the Citizen of the Year Award from the North Shore Kiwanis Club. Additionally, Vito was an avid sailor and served as commodore of the Sea Cliff Yacht Club. In 2001, Vito and Rose moved to Annapolis, MD, where they maintained an energetic lifestyle, enjoyed interacting with their children and grandchildren, and maintained an active involvement in their parish. Professionally, Vito worked for several engineering firms including Lockheed Martin, from which he retired in 1989 as Chief Mechanical Engineer. Family was Vito’s top priority. He developed strong and loving relationships with family and with friends. Vito was an avid reader and vociferous proponent of life-long learning. He was also an accomplished woodworker, and his beautiful furniture adorns the homes of his children and grandchildren. Vito is survived by his wife, Rose, his children, Anthony (Laura), Elvira (John), John (Marti), Benedict (Carrie), and his 8 grandchildren. He will remain forever in the hearts of family and friends.
