Richard Griffiths died peacefully on December 19, 2022 in Annapolis. "Dick" was born in Utica, New York on February 6, 1940 to Griffith Griffiths and Margaret Evans. He was raised in the Buffalo, New York area along with his sister, Sandy Griffiths of Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
Dick met Elaine Turri while working a summer job at the Sealtest Ice Cream plant in Buffalo, New York. The two were married in 1963, and moved to Nashua, New Hampshire in the early 1970's, where they lived for over 40 years, raising their four children; Christopher Griffiths of Annapolis, Maryland; Brian Griffiths of Loveland, Ohio; Karen Groome of Washington, D.C.; and, Sheila Griffiths of Los Angeles, California. Dick and Elaine were married for almost 60 years, until her death in 2021.
Dick's greatest pride was his enduring marriage, and his close knit family. In addition to his children, Dick is survived by 10 grandchildren: Joseph, Ella, Michael, Nicholas, Jessica, Nina, Gianna, Hannah, Kamran and Roya.
After attending Clarkson University, Dick began a long career in food service management. He started with the Buffalo-based Service Systems Corporation. He helped grow that company into one of the largest food service companies in the country. Service Systems was sold and Dick remained with its successor corporations. He retired as a Regional Vice President for Sodexho Marriott. Dick was known as a tireless worker, and a master at developing sincere and enduring client relationships. As a manager, he was straightforward, honest, and always treated people with respect.
Dick was a longtime boater, although he would admit he was sometimes a nervous Captain. He spent years navigating the "treacherous" waters of New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee. But he was happiest when the boat was safely docked, and he could gather with his friends and family at the pier to watch the sun sink behind the White Mountains.
Dick will be remembered by his family as the consummate story teller. He had a keen intellect, a sharp wit, and a knack for telling (and re-telling) tales. Dinners at his table were prolonged for hours, as he regaled loved ones with anecdotes of questionable veracity. He will be missed at the table this Christmas season, but remembered with love and affection.
Those who wish to call may do so at the John M. Taylor funeral home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland on Wednesday, December 28 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow at the Maryland Inn. A private internment will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.
