Richard Lyles Coale, age 60, passed away peacefully at his home in Annapolis, Maryland on July 30, 2021. Born July 3, 1961 in Baltimore, Maryland. Richard was the son of the late Eleanor H. (Jones) Coale and the late Joseph I. Coale, Jr. He is survived by his wife T. Elizabeth Coale, his daughters Sarah W. Coale and Mary E. Coale, and his soon to be born grandson Ellington Coale. He is also survived by his siblings J. Howard Coale, John P. Coale, Nancy C. Baker, Linda H. Coale, Sally B. Matthai, and Charles N. Coale. Being the youngest of seven siblings, family was always very important to Rick. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, and soon to be grandfather.
Richard attended the St. Paul School in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the University of Florida and Towson State University where he studied history. Having had a natural talent for mathematics and finances from a young age, he chose to follow in his oldest brother’s footsteps and entered the financial industry.
Richard worked as a financial advisor for 34 years. He started and ended his career at Chapin Davis, Inc. Baltimore, Maryland. Over the years he spent time working with his brother Howard at Connecticut Capital, Greenwich, Connecticut. He opened and managed a branch office for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Westminster, Maryland. While living in Cape May, New Jersey he worked as an independent broker through Raymond James and then as a branch manager for Wells Fargo. After moving to Annapolis, Maryland he returned to Chapin Davis, Inc. for the remainder of his career.
Richard was a passionate sailor all his life. Every childhood summer was spent in Cape May, New Jersey where he learned to sail and fell in love with the sea. In the year 2000, he moved with his wife and two daughters from Baltimore, Maryland to Cape May, New Jersey, hopeful that his children would grow up to share in his love of the ocean (which they did). Over the ten years that he lived in Cape May, he was an avid J24 sailor, both competitively and leisurely. Rick competed in the J24 World Championships in Medemblik, Holland 2003 and in Annapolis, Maryland 2009 as a crew member on John Wilsey’s boat ‘Red Dawn.’ He competed in many offshore regattas as a regular crew member aboard John Wilsey’s ‘Full Charge’ and Dave Sharp’s ‘Blink.’ He served as Commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May in 2009.
Rick’s other great passions in life were reading and music. He was known to read several books in a single day. He loved anything to do with history; particularly military and religious history. His love of music extended across many genres. He especially enjoyed following the Grateful Dead with his wife Beth and their friends. He also loved his dogs deeply and we believe he was greeted by Daisy, Hobo, Katy, and Molly with wagging tails in heaven.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church 109 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, Maryland 21401 on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 10:30 AM.
