John Cunningham, a fifth generation Washingtonian, died April 17, 2024, in Pensacola, FL. John was born July 16, 1951, in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC to Bill and Rose Cunningham. He attended Little Flower School in Bethesda, MD, St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC and graduated from Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, MD.
In the seventy’s John began working for Control Data Corporation, which at the time was one of the top ten computer companies in the U.S., installing and repairing computer systems and peripherals in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. He then moved to SMS Corporation providing computer system support for Federal government agencies. And worked as an IT Specialist for the USDA where he spent over 30 years.
After high school John initially resided in what he and his friends referred to as “The Red House” in Potomac, MD where countless fun times were had. He later moved to Herndon, VA for his position with SMS and resided there for many years. After that, he was able to move to Ocean City, MD continuing in his computer services support role for the USDA and assisting his friends at Mann Properties with their technology platform. John, and his wife Patty, subsequently relocated to Santa Rosa Beach, FL to enjoy the fun and the sun.
John enjoyed golfing in his earlier years, boating, playing guitar with his friends, researching the latest gadgetry offered by technology and the finer things in life whether that be cars, clothes, fine dining, or exquisite wines. John always went “first class” and had a phenomenal time!
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Bill Cunningham. He is survived by his wife Patty Cunningham of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, brother Jim Cunningham of Ocean City, MD, his son Christopher Cunningham of Herndon, VA and grandson Justice Cunningham, step-son Christopher Pappenfort and step-granddaughter Bree Winn of Santa Rosa Beach, nieces and nephews Karen Furda of Pasadena, MD, Kristi Miers and Kevin Cunningham of Derwood, MD and as well as several grand nieces and nephews.
A visitation for John will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 10 am to 11 am at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. A private graveside service will occur Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 11:30 am in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
